Week 03, Criminal Justice System

Assignments for Week 3:

I. This week, sign up with other two other students for the term paper. Three students will write the paper and will also give the presentation during the last two class sessions. I will hand out a signup sheet this week, so you need to have decided on your partners.

Read Chapter 2, “The Nature and Extent of Crime,” in your textbook. We will have Quiz #2 on this chapter and on the lecture from last week.

II. Brief Lecture, Chapter 4, Criminal Law: Substance and Procedure (We are skipping Chapter 3)

III. Critical Thinking Questions on Chapter 1 for Paper:

1. Describe the differences between the formal and informal justice systems. Is it fair to treat some offenders informally?

2. What are the layers of the criminal justice wedding cake model? Give an example of a crime for each layer.

3. What are the basic elements of each perspective on justice? Which perspective best represents your own point of view?

Critical thinking Questions on Chapter 2 for Paper:

1. Would you answer honestly if a national crime survey asked you about your criminal behavior, including drinking and drug use? If not, why not? If you answered no, do you question the accuracy of self-report surveys?

2. How would you explain gender differences in the crime rate? Do you think males are more violent than females? Why?

3. The UCR states that crime rates are higher in large cities than in small towns. What does that say about the effects of TV, films, and music on teenagers’ behavior, assuming that mass media is also available in rural areas?

4. If the characteristics of chronic offenders could be determined, should people with those traits be monitored from birth?
