Week 03, Criminal Justice System

Assignments for Week 3:

1. Read Chapter 2, “The Nature and Extent of Crime,” in your textbook. We will have Quiz #2 on this chapter and on the lecture from last week.

2. Brief Lecture, Chapter 4, Criminal Law: Substance and Procedure

3. Critical Thinking Questions on Chapter 2 for Group Discussion:

a. Would you answer honestly if a national crime survey asked you about your criinal behavior, including drinking and drug use? If not, why not? If you answered no, do you question the accuracy of self-report surveys?

b. How would you explain gender differences in the crime rate? Do you think males are more violent than females? Why?

c. Assuming that males are more violent than females, does this mean that crime has a biological rather than a social basis (because males and females share a similar environment)?

d. The UCR states that crime rates are higher in large cities than in small towns. What does that say about the effects of TV, films, and music on teenagers’ behavior?

e. What social and environmental factors do you believe influence the crime rate? For example, do you think a national emergency such as the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks would increase of decrease crime rates or have relatively little effect or influence?

f. If the characteristics of chronic offenders could be determined, should people with those traits be monitored from birth?
